Albany stands on Menang Noongar country, a landscape shaped by stories long before 1826. The granite, inlets and sea have guided people for tens of thousands of years. That deep history still anchors the city today.
1826 – Western Australia’s First Settlement
Major Edmund Lockyer’s small garrison arrived at King George Sound to mark British presence in the west. They endured isolation, poor supply lines and rough weather, but the post grew into a port town trading timber and produce. Albany became the first European settlement in Western Australia.
The Anzac Departure
In 1914 more than 30 000 troops gathered in King George Sound. For many it was the last Australian shore they would ever see. The National Anzac Centre on Mount Clarence now overlooks those same waters, keeping the story alive.
Streets That Still Speak
Heritage buildings along Stirling Terrace and York Street hold their shape and pride. Restored façades, corner pubs and the Town Hall show how trade and community built something lasting.
Then and Now
Albany’s charm lies in continuity. Industry moved from whaling to tourism, yet the same headlands, harbour and homes keep their character. It’s a city that remembers where it began while welcoming what’s next.
Living History – Why It Matters Today
Buyers in Albany aren’t only purchasing a home; they’re joining a story. Streets feel human, views carry meaning and heritage suburbs hold steady value. From Elleker to Middleton Beach, each area offers history and lifestyle in equal measure.
